How can I set my route preferences?

  • Updated

Scoop matches carpools using a community-based philosophy. Each carpool you’re matched in is designed to be the best fit for your preferences and the overall community. Sometimes, your matched route may seem a little out of the way—that usually just means there wasn’t a closer Rider available for your requested time. Our goal is always to match trips on the most convenient route possible for everyone.

📝Note: Route preferences are only available to commuters who are carpooling as a Driver.

How Carpool Matching Works

When matching carpools, Scoop's algorithm considers various factors to ensure everyone gets to work on time in a convenient carpool they love!

Some of the included factors are:

  • Scheduled pickup and drop-off times

  • Preferred pickup times

  • Scheduled origin and destination addresses

  • Favorited and Top Favorited carpoolers

  • Route and personal blocks

Customizing Your Route Preferences

Scoop allows you to define your route preferences by providing feedback in the app.

When you carpool as a Driver, you'll have the option to customize your route preferences immediately after being matched in a carpool or after a carpool is complete.

👉Tip: placing numerous route preferences may have a negative effect on your match rate

Adjusting Route Preferences During a Carpool

If your matched carpool’s route doesn’t work for you, you may select Rider is too far off my route or Both Riders are too far off my route from the cancellation menu.

When you do this, you'll be prompted to give feedback on why the route did not work (Pickup/Both pickups, Drop-off/Both drop-offs, or Combination of the two).

Once submitted, we will prevent you from being matched in the same neighborhood of the selected location.

📝Note: You cannot currently block toll roads, highways, zip codes, or specific cities/routes.

Removing a Rider from a 3-Person Carpool

If you’re dissatisfied with the route for just one of your Riders in a 3-person carpool, you can remove that Rider from the carpool by tapping Remove in your Matched View and selecting which Rider you’d like to remove.

From there, select Rider is too far off my route and provide feedback on why the route did not work.

Setting Route Preferences Without Canceling

If you're able to, we'd love for you to still take the carpool and simply have us prevent similar trips for future matches.

This allows you to still receive your Driver reimbursement for the carpool, and your fellow commuter is not left without a ride. You can do this by selecting Take the carpool. If you really cannot take the trip, select Cancel the carpool.

📝Note: If you choose to cancel, no cancellation fee will be charged. You’ll also retain your monthly cancellation fee waiver and can access to the Carpool Shortlist.

Leaving Route Feedback After a Carpool

After each carpool, you'll have the opportunity to provide feedback on your route.

  • If you select a 1 or 2-star rating, you’ll be prompted to provide more details about the route.
  • Tap Avoid routes like this to prevent similar routes in future matches.
  • Specify why the route didn’t work: Pickup, Drop-off, or Both.

Once complete, rate your fellow commuter(s) and submit your feedback.

Providing route feedback helps us improve future matches while still supporting the community. By sharing your preferences and letting us know when routes don’t work, you can optimize your commutes without missing out on your rides or reimbursements.
