How does backup commute work?

  • Updated

If Scoop is unable to match you in a carpool, backup commute options may become available in the Scoop app to help you get to or from work.

Backup commute options become available when:

  1. You schedule a carpool as a Rider
  2. Scoop is unable to find you a carpool or your confirmed carpool is canceled
  3. You are added to the carpool shortlist but are not selected, or your shortlist match is canceled by the Driver

Once these conditions are met, you’ll see backup commute options directly in the app.

Sponsored backup commutes

If your employer partners with Scoop, you may be eligible for a sponsored backup commute through Lyft. When a carpool isn’t available, you’ll receive a Lyft Pass to use toward your commute instead.

The value of your Lyft Pass depends on your employer’s Enterprise carpool program.

How to claim your Lyft Pass

  1. From the carpool shortlist, tap View backup commute options
  2. Tap Get a ride with Lyft to view the details for your Lyft Pass
  3. Tap Claim Lyft Pass

    • Once claimed, your carpool shortlist request will be automatically removed

  4. Tap Open Lyft app to schedule your ride

Scoop will automatically send your pickup and drop-off locations to Lyft to make scheduling your ride easier.

Your Lyft Pass will be applied automatically to eligible trips, and any remaining balance will be handled directly in the Lyft app.

Timing requirements

You can request your Lyft ride starting 30 minutes before the scheduled start time and up to 30 minutes after the scheduled end time of your original Scoop trip. For example, if your Scoop trip is scheduled from 9:00 AM–10:00 AM, you can request a Lyft pickup between 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM.

Lyft Pass eligibility requirements

To successfully redeem your Lyft Pass, your ride must meet the following requirements:

  • The pickup and drop-off addresses in Lyft must exactly match the addresses used in your Scoop trip request
  • Both your Scoop trip and your Lyft ride must use a work address that is included in your company’s Enterprise carpool program
  • Your Lyft Pass must be claimed from the Scoop app by 10:30 AM for morning trips or 8:00 PM for evening trips*
  • Your Lyft ride must be requested and picked up within 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after the scheduled start and end time of your original Scoop trip

You can review your Lyft Pass eligibility details in the Scoop app by tapping Get a ride with Lyft, and again in the Lyft app after the pass has been claimed. For more information on how to view and use your Lyft Pass, see: Promotions, ride discounts, and Lyft credit.

Scoop will use the phone number associated with your Scoop account to locate your existing Lyft account. If you don’t already have a Lyft account, you’ll need to create one before requesting your ride.

📢 Important: Lyft Passes do not apply to driver tips, cancellation fees, or damage charges. Any additional charges are the responsibility of the Lyft user and are subject to Lyft's Terms of Service.

Non-sponsored backup commutes

If you don’t see a sponsored backup commute option, make sure your work email address is added to your Scoop account so you can receive all available benefits through your employer’s Enterprise carpool program.

📝Note: Not all employers offer sponsored backup commutes. If this benefit isn’t included in your employer’s program, sponsored options may not be available in the app.

Backup commutes while using shift scheduling

If you’re using shift scheduling, backup commute options may become available if Scoop is unable to match you in a round-trip carpool or if your carpool is canceled.

Backup commute options will appear if

  • You schedule a round-trip carpool as a Rider, and Scoop is unable to find a match

  • Either your to-work or return carpool is canceled

If your to-work trip is canceled, your return trip will be automatically canceled as well. In this case, you may be eligible for backup commutes for both trips, meaning you could claim:

  • One Lyft Pass for your to-work trip, and

  • A second Lyft Pass for your return trip

How to claim your backup commute

Follow the same steps outlined above to claim and use your Lyft Pass once backup commute options become available.

📝Note: While you can claim your Lyft Pass as soon as it becomes available, your Lyft ride must be requested within 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after the scheduled start and end time of your original Scoop trip.

📢 Important: The expiration time shown in app for your Lyft Pass refers to the window in which you can schedule your Lyft ride. However, the pass must be claimed from the Scoop app by 10:30 AM for morning trips or 8:00 PM for evening trips, regardless of the expiration time shown in the app. Once these times have passed, the Lyft Pass can no longer be claimed from Scoop.
